Programs and Services

Support
JCADA operates a Domestic Abuse Treatment Team to meet the diverse needs of its clients and their children.  JCADA’s Case Manager oversees all aspects of a client’s assistance, from arranging for safe shelter or legal assistance to providing for food and job training.  JCADA contracts with the Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA) to provide counseling for clients and their families, and has conducted numerous training programs for JSSA clinicians to ensure that they are prepared to effectively handle domestic abuse cases.

JCADA is making a difference:

  • JCADA has responded to more than 500 callers to the confidential hotline.
  • JCADA has provided extensive case management services to over 55 victims and their children, including food, rent subsidy, clothing, relocation, cell phones and other basic needs.
  • JCADA has arranged for therapists trained in domestic abuse.
  • JCADA has arranged for the services of pro-bono lawyers, valued in excess of $50,000.
  • JCADA has worked with victims to ensure their safety and that of their children.
  • JCADA has helped victims become financially independent by providing career counseling.

Prevention
Strategies to successfully eliminate domestic abuse must include helping young people learn to recognize the signs of domestic abuse so they can prevent recurrence in future generations.  We must also ensure that our community leaders are prepared to respond appropriately.

JCADA has a proven track record:

  • Sponsored abuse prevention programs, reaching more than 500 Jewish teenagers.
  • Developed curricula for a program tailored to grades 7 through 12 which includes bullying, sexual harassment, appropriate gender role behaviors, healthy vs. unhealthy relationships and dating abuse.
  • Developed curricula for programs tailored to college students, providing information about the effects of alcohol and drugs and acquaintance date rape.
  • Educated Parents – JCADA also offers programs for parents to help them become aware of these issues so that they can provide needed guidance and support.
  • JCADA has also developed training materials for use by the community.

Community Education
JCADA is committed to raising awareness that domestic abuse IS a problem in the Jewish community – just as it is in every other community.  That is why JCADA is working to bring this issue to the forefront.  We must educate our family, friends, neighbors, and community leaders in order to prevent the cycle of violence from continuing in future generations.

JCADA is making an impact in the community:

  • Sponsored programs for more than 1300 community members to raise awareness on how to deal with this sensitive issue in a way that a victim will feel comfortable seeking help.
  • Arranged training for 50 local rabbis of all denominations to understand the complexities of domestic abuse situations, to detect signs of abuse among congregants, and to refer victims to appropriate agencies.
  • Trained cantors, religious school personnel, mikva (ritual bath) attendants, JSSA clinicians, rabbis’ wives, and private practice mental health professionals.  These programs are ongoing.
  • Raised awareness, in cooperation with the rabbinic community, by co-hosting a “Domestic Abuse Shabbat.”
  • Distributed a Resource Guide to all area congregational rabbis, “Embracing Justice: A Resource Guide for Rabbis on Domestic Abuse” published by Jewish Women International.
  • Developed a public relations campaign with brochures and ads that have been placed in synagogues, schools, media outlets, and other locations.
  • Arranged for speakers to present programs throughout the Washington area for synagogues, service organizations and community groups.
  • Hosted an annual event to highlight the need for awareness and support, raise funds to provide for ongoing services, and presents awards to community leaders for their tireless work on behalf of those in need.

Corporate Sponsorship Program
JCADA is proud to be working in the business community to bring Corporate Wellness programs focused on addressing Domestic Violence in the workplace.  Wellness programs may also focus on related topics

  • How to recognize the signs of abuse and what to do to help a friend or coworker
  • How supervisors can help employees dealing with this issue
  • Talking to teenagers about dating violence
  • The psychology of domestic violence including the effects on children
  • Developing and maintaining Healthy Relationships – a program for young adults
  • Resources and volunteer opportunities in the community
  • How Human Resources can develop safety plans for employees at risk

The program was started to address these startling facts:

  • 74 percent of employed battered women are harassed by their partner while at work.
  • More than 1 million women are stalked each year in the U.S., and over a quarter of them report missing work as a result of the stalking.
  • The annual cost of lost productivity due to domestic violence is estimated as $727.8 million, with over 7.9 million paid workdays lost each year.
  • The costs of intimate partner violence exceed $5.8 billion each year, $4.1 billion of which is for direct medical and mental health care services, much of it paid for by the employer.

JCADA has found that a victim will often come forward following a community education forum.  Other participants frequently will ask how to help a friend or colleague who may be dealing with an abusive situation at home.

Programs are generally arranged for between 60 and 90 minutes, including time for questions and answers.  Programs may be held during lunch time, or during the work day.

All programs are secular, and are appropriate for a general audience.

Sponsorship Levels range from $500 to $5,000.  Contact the JCADA office at 301-315-8040 for more information.  All sponsors will be recognized on JCADA’s website, in certain promotional materials, and in materials related to JCADA’s annual event, which raises both operating funds and community awareness.
