Grounding exercises are a way for you to firmly anchor yourself in the present. Grounding exercises are helpful for many situations where you find yourself becoming overwhelmed or distracted by distressing memories, thoughts or feelings. Only to use the exercises that you feel comfortable with.

​A Protection Order is a court order that requires one person to refrain from doing certain acts, such as staying away or not contacting another person. JCADA does not provide legal assistance in obtaining a PO but an Advocate can discuss your eligibility, and how to obtain one in MD, VA or DC. 

The Address Confidentiality Program (ACP) allows survivors to maintain a confidential physical address. 

The ACP provides: 

• A substitute address for survivors who have moved or are about to move to a new location, unknown to their abuser.

•  A free and confidential mail-forwarding service. 

JCADA’s Victim Advocates are certified ACP Application Assistants in DC, Maryland, and Virginia and can help you enroll in ACP after determining eligibility.

JCADA highly recommends that you create an individualized plan with a Victim Advocate or Clinician to help keep you and/or your children safer in an abusive situation.

When safety planning, it is important to consider your tech safety. Abusers can use technology to stalk, harass, and further perpetuate abuse. Below is a list of considerations when safety planning around technology. This is not an exhaustive list, and we recommend looking through the SafetyNet Project website as well as talking with a JCADA Victim Advocate or Clinician.

• Change ALL passwords regardless

• Create a new and safe email account

• Check for any tracking devices (including, but not limited to Airtags, Airpods, Tiles, etc.) 

• Any form of unwanted communication should be documented and logged  

• Find My Friends application

• Any application that shares location (including, but not limited to Snapchat, Instagram, etc.)

• Applications on children's phones  

• Shared photos (sometimes document the location the photo was taken)

• Shared iCloud accounts

• Shared banking information  

• Shared email accounts

• Medical and health provider portals
